P2187 — System Too Lean at Idle (Bank 1)
Drive with caution — fix soon.
What P2187 means
P2187 means the engine computer detected too much air relative to fuel on bank 1 specifically while the engine is idling. The fact that it only shows up at idle is the important clue: at idle the engine draws very little air, so a small vacuum leak is a large percentage of the total and the computer cannot trim around it, while at speed the same leak disappears into a much larger airflow. It is a frequent code on BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz engines, where plastic intake components, crankcase ventilation diaphragms and vacuum lines get brittle with heat and age.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough, uneven or hunting idle
- Idle speed surges up and down
- Hesitation or stumble when pulling away from a stop
- Engine occasionally stalls at idle or when coming to a stop
- Runs normally once up to speed
Common causes
- Vacuum leak from a cracked intake hose, brittle vacuum line or leaking intake manifold gasket
- Failed PCV valve or a torn crankcase ventilation diaphragm, a classic failure on BMW and VW/Audi engines
- Leaking or stuck-open EVAP purge valve
- Dirty or failing mass airflow (MAF) sensor under-reporting incoming air
- Weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter or dirty injectors giving too little fuel at idle
- Leaking throttle body or intake runner gasket
- Exhaust leak ahead of the upstream oxygen sensor drawing in outside air
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a P2187?
For normal short trips usually yes, but the car may idle badly and could stall at a light. Avoid driving it if the engine stalls regularly, since that is a safety problem in traffic, and get the leak found before it grows.
Why does this code only appear at idle?
At idle the engine pulls in very little air, so a small vacuum leak makes up a big share of what actually enters. At higher rpm the same leak is a tiny fraction of a much larger airflow, so the computer can trim around it and the code goes quiet. That pattern is the strongest clue that you are chasing a leak rather than a fuel supply problem.
How is P2187 diagnosed?
The standard approach is a smoke test: the intake is filled with harmless smoke and the technician watches for it escaping from hoses, gaskets, the crankcase ventilation system or the intake manifold. Comparing fuel trims at idle against fuel trims at around 2,500 rpm confirms the diagnosis, and if the intake holds smoke the next checks are the MAF sensor reading and fuel pressure.
What is the difference between P2187 and P0171?
Both describe a lean condition on bank 1, but P0171 is set across general operating conditions while P2187 is specific to idle. Seeing P2187 on its own narrows the search considerably toward a vacuum or crankcase ventilation leak. If both codes are present, the leak is probably large enough to affect the engine everywhere.
